Why is the Respect of Parents so Scarce in Our Times

Ubqari Magazine - February 2014

Aashique Hussain Butt, Rawalpindi

If we think a little bit that does a bird or a goat or a cat nourishes its offspring so that they become a source of help in the old age? No, it only nourishes the babies according to the laws of the nature. It does not have any greed or benefit in this regard.

What is the reason for the scarcity of respect of parents in the current era? When we will move away from the laws of the nature, problems will be created for us. An important problem in this regard is the lack of the respect for elders. The law of the nature is that we give birth to the children and nourish them and teach them skills and knowledge, because this is the will of Allah Almighty. Just like our parents nourished and groomed us and fulfilled their duties. Similarly we have a duty too by Allah Almighty that we fulfill the duty of educating and grooming our children. Whereas what is happening is that we teach them by keeping a business point of view in our mind and teach them skills. While educating them to become doctors or lawyers we do not have this thing in our mind that our children will grow up to become doctors and serve the agonized humanity. Or that they would become lawyers and serve the oppressed humanity. Rather we have a view that by becoming lawyers or doctors they would charge huge fees and increase their wealth and property and obtain all the worldly facilities and that they would become a source of support in our old age. It is a pity that we do not have knowledge of the next moment and we have garnered wealth for 100 years. What we forget is that the creator, sustainer and creator of all the means is Allah Almighty. When we would groom our children in such a way then the children would also think in the same way. And while thinking from a business point of view that an old buffalo that does not yield milk or an old ox that is no more useful for ploughing is given away to a butcher, similarly the old parents who cannot earn, what would be their importance? If we think a little bit that does a bird or a goat or a cat nourishes its offspring so that they become a source of help in the old age? No, It only nourishes the babies according to the laws of the nature. It does not have any greed or benefit in this regard. As opposed to this if we nourish the children according to the will of Allah Almighty, and along with the worldly education we provide them religious education too and focus on their character building, then when our children would read in hadith (treat your children with love, unfortunate is that person who found his/her parents in old age and who did not earn heaven, heaven is under the feet of the mother. When you find your parents in senility do not say even a single harsh word to them. There is no curtain between mother and Allah). Then they would be rectified. And instead of looking for personal benefits or profit they would think about the whole humanity. When the thought would be collective and global then in the nation, people would be born who would have the concern of humanity in their heart. And when our children would read Islamic literature then they would come to know that what the position of parents in front of Allah is.
